MAITLAND SHOW
Known as the travelling festival Groovin The Moo has come a long way in a short time since it’s humble beginnings at Gloucester Showground only 5 years ago.  This year the festival ran in 5 country towns featuring an impressive line up including Silverchair, British India, Kisschasy, Miami Horror, Empire Of The Sun, Grinsppoon, Tegan & Sara and Vampire Weekend.

We had heard talk of the festival enticing a rough crowd the previous year, so we rocked up to Maitland expecting to get few war wounds from encounters with the punters, but we are pleased to report that this was not the case.  We’ve had rougher crowds at our backyard bbq’s!

In all seriousness, the crowd in the main stage area was excited but not aggressive or rough, however the more chilled vibe could be attributed to headlining act Vampire Weekend or maybe it was because the intoxicated seemed to hang out in the segregated bar area?  We did however notice more than a few stray cans flying about in the Moolin Rouge Tent hitting the punters and performers, and we would like to take this opportunity to reinforce that throwing shit around just ain’t cool dickheads!

The run down of our day:
Ÿ
Arrived:  Mid afternoon, did the usual standard surveillance the Festival Grounds checking the essentials (entertainment hubs, toilets and the bar).
Ÿ
Paid tribute to the volume of easy assessable porter loos, a sight that would surely make Kenny proud.
Ÿ
Checked out the Moolin Rouge Stage and caught The Funkoars performance.  These guys are setting new standards for Aussie hip hop with their poetic high eneregy performance.
Ÿ
Chatted with Tripple J unnearthed winners who won the chance to hob nob with Grinners backstage.
Ÿ
Checked out Tegan & Sara on the main stage,  they are undoubtedly talented and easy listening but their pop rock didn’t quiet hit it for us.
Ÿ
Checked out the bar.
Ÿ
Grabbed some pics with the punters and surveyed a few to find out what band they were most excited to see...and although it pains us to report, Vampire Weekend appeared to be a popular
answer (we possibly should have ventured into the main bar area and asked the drinking punters who was the draw card for them,in order to gain a broader perspective).
Ÿ
Watched Grinspoon on the main stage. These fella’s performed faultlessly as usual, belting out some familiar tracks to engage the crowd in a sing a long and ensuring fans had their hit of Aussie Rock.
Ÿ
Checked out the bar.
Ÿ
Smoozed in the VIP area.
Ÿ
Squeezed to front of stage to watch Empire of the Sun.  WOW... These guys know how to dazzle the crowd with props, costumes and theatrics!  Four dancers clad in tight lycra and elaborate head dress manoeuvred on stage in choreographed routine to each song.   This was by far the highlight of the day for us, the music was pure perfection and entertainment was the most interesting we’ve seen to date at a festival!
Ÿ
Checked out the bar.
Ÿ
Wandered aimless, dazed and confused.
Ÿ
Wiggled our way to the front of the MySpace stage to see Vampire Weekend and literally froze our arses off waiting for the fashionable late VW boys to front the stage.  We admired the stage whilst waiting and thought the Crystal chandeliers were a nice touch.  Spoke with the crowd who were incredibly excited so we anticipated something really special (admittedly not familiar with their music).  The band hit the first few bars, the lights dazzled then the lead singer took to the mic...AND....nothing, sorry fans but we have felt more inspired by the instore vibes playing at Supre. We stayed for 3 songs and then hit the road.  No offence to our overseas visitors, but someone please explain to us the hype!  We can name 1000’s of more interesting, talented Australian performers so why are we importing soft pop like that to our festivals?
Ÿ
We couldn’t stay for Silverchair’s performance due to other commitments and would have liked to see how they did considering it is their old stomping ground.

Overall, we felt this was decent value for money with plenty of facilities including cloak room and two bar areas.  It didn’t feel overcrowded and we were impressed with the Aussie influenced line-up and besides, any festival taking live music to country areas gets Kudos from us!
