We arrived just early enough to set up our tent before the hard rain pelted down upon us. We set off down town in search alcohol supplies and returned to discover the wind had ripped our heavy duty tarp and our lovely beachside spot, was possibly the worst side of the grounds to be camping when subnormal weather conditions hit! None the less, we threw back a few bevies, wrapped ourselves and equipment in some secondhand raincoats and hit stage area to watch the show.
The unfavourable weather conditions had not deterred the crowds and a few blokes embraced the conditions decorating themselves in mud and rejoicing. The majority of punters were happy and the performers kept the crowds spirits high regardless of Mother Natures tantrum.
The line up consisted of a number of musicians I had never heard before and a few that I had. Regardless of familiarity of the line up (or lack of), it was a great blend of Bluesie Roots, Folk and just a touch of Rock.
The facilities at Festival of the Sun provided ample campsites, guest swimming pool, optional cabins and a courtesy bus in and out of town (kudos for this)!
On the downside, given the weather conditions a few extra scheduled cleans of the toilet/shower block would have been welcomed.
Also, there were a few sections of the grounds that were incredibly muddy, and next year
maybe the organisers could consider ways to improve main transit ways, like dumping hay in the event of hard rain? Credit where its due though, they did arrange a dumping sand in the main stage area which provided a soft blanket over the mud.
Overall, this is one of my favourite festivals because of its laid back nature and it’s encouragement of family groups.
Another draw card is it the cost is reasonable and includes camping.... Make sure you pencil this one in the diary for December 2009.
