Australia's first Rock Festival ‘Pilgrimage For Pop’ was held on the over 24th & 25th Jan 1970 in the small town of Ourimbah on the north coast of NSW – headliners were Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs.

‘Launching Place Festival’ was the first Rock Festival to be held in Victoria in December 1970.

The First Australian music festival to offer an overseas headliner was the ‘Australian Festival of Progressive Music’, held in 1971.  Cat Stevens and Black Sabbath were billed as headliners, though Cat Stevens didn’t show.

FESTIVAL JUNKIE
Magic Dirt, Powderfinder & Screamfeeder.  This was also the first ever year of Triple J Unearthed competition – one that year by Ginspoon who played on the bill.

Woodford Folk Festival commenced as the Maleny Folk Festival in Maleny, QLD on March 13, 1987 at the local showgrounds to a crowd of just 900 patrons.  The festival now runs over six days / nights incorporating workshops, street theatre, film, comedy, sustainability workshops, folk medicine, nigh cabaret shows & a children’s area with art dance & circus workshops. Woodford now accommodates over 580 performers and attracts 130,000 patrons.

Bluesfest first began in 1990 at the Arts Factory in Byron Bay NSW. Originally named The East Cost Blues Festival then Byron Bay Blues fest, it’s now known at Bluesfest.

The Gumball, managed by Brothers Matt & Dan Johnston, first ran in 2005 in the front yard of their parents 100acre bush property near the Hunter Valley, NSW.

Pearl Jam were booked to headline 2001s Big Day Out, but cancelled due to the tragic loss of nine lives while they were performing at Denmarks Rosklide Festival in 2000.

In 2007, Big Day Out organisers unsuccessfully tried to ban patrons from wearing, bring or displaying the Australian flag.
